Two Tales of Chuck Palahniuk

Two important things you may know abut Palahniuk: he lives in Portland, and is a smart ass. Also, he doesn't really like the whole publicity schtick it seems.

Yesterday at work I was going around and straightening shelves and what have you, when my friend/co-worker Julie comes by to put out some more books. She is shelving some sale books when all of a sudden she turns around and asks me, "When was Chuck Palahniuk here?" Turns out that a big stack of one of his books that we have on sale all now have stickers that say "Autographed" on them, and they are indeed autographed. And it had happened sometime recently because they weren't autographed yesterday. It seems that Palahniuk and Powell's have a good relationship because we have given him a roll of our "Autographed" stickers, and in return he apparently will autograph random things if he's in the store. Now the smart-ass part of this story is that 1) he didn't stop to tell anyone he was here or that he was doing it and 2) he only autographed the copies of his books that were on sale and that we had a surplus of.

In a similar vein is a story Julie told me about when she used to work at Borders. A book of his had just come out and they had Palahniuk come in to autograph about 40 copies. Whenever they looked over he was autographing away. When he was done he left.

Turns out he had signed one copy forty times.
